The high heat input of conventional fusion welding processes is often disadvantageous from a corrosion perspective. By utilizing friction stir welding, it is possible to work with minimal heat input well below the melting temperature. The precise control of heat input and heat dissipation can furthermore make an important contribution to controlling micro structural evolution and will be investigated for aluminium alloys EN AW-7020 and EN AW-7075. The corrosion-related interrelation-ship between the characteristic weld zones is analysed by means of immersion test and potentiodynamic polarisation.
